OK, so it seems that there is some new people turning up at SL these days and since we're not always familiar with each other, this is a thread to introduce yourself on SL. It's kinda like turning up at someone's house and you announce your arrival sort of thing.

NEW MEMBERS please post here first before posting elsewhere on this forum. Thanks!

OLD/EXISTING MEMBERS please write something about yourself on this thread too.

Hi everyone, im not a subud member so i hope nobody minds me being here! I am in the process of finding out more and locating a local group, so reading through this forum has been really helpful.
My dad worked on the Anugraha site back in the 80's, and has been in touch with a few of the guys he worked with there through email contact. He has also been trying to locate Edward Troxell, who was originally living in California but had no luck yet (any info would be great) Hope everyone keeps posting to continue giving a wonderful insight to Subud life. Thanks again Very Happy

Hi, I am writing to say something about myself so I won't get kicked off of this site's newsletter email list! My name is Renee and I live in New York City. I was opened in NYC in May 1969 and am not an active member at the moment. I am 59 years old. I have one daughter, age 29, who is expecting my first grandchild the end of November. I am finally realizing a long time dream and going back to school to become an arts therapist. I have degree in Special Education (autistic, Downe's syndrome children) and hope to work with children & teenagers as an arts therapist one day. Painting and politics are two of my big passions; and music! Okay, so I hope this keeps me on the mailing list! I like to keep up with what everyone's doing around the world and enjoy visiting this site. Shalom.

Hello, I’m Brianna. I live in Seattle, WA USA but didn’t start out here. I think I started out as a tiny egg… no, no, to far back… I started out in England. Born in London at Paddington hospital then moved to “the states” when I was 8 years (they kept in the hospital far too long).

These days I’m a collector. So far I’ve collected an entire set of children (though not fully matching), some nice fat bills, a job to pay them with (or at least to perpetuate the illusion that I may some day pay them), a sweetie pie (We laugh at each others jokes. Plus it’s great to have someone to turn to and say “did you see that?”), too many cats (of eccentric old ladies proportions), many books, many more unfinished works of art (some actual and some still trapped in my head), some great memories and some terrible ones (tired to give them back but the manufacturer claimed they were damaged in shipping) and a bunch of half baked ideas. My dream is to become fully awake and fully myself. Oh, and also I want to become an Art Therapist. It’s my right work and all that.

Well, I hope to be able to grab a few moments in the mayhem to explore this interesting collection of thoughts and images. Perhaps I’ll even add a few of my own. Thanks for the welcome! Very Happy (this looks just like me... )

Hi there folks, I'm here representing England (for what it's worth) as I see it's a little weighed down in US favour at the moment with all the posts thus far.. So, just so you know Subud is alive and well and living in England under a bank of cloud! Anyway, about me (my favourite bit) I'm 27 tho' 28 in October. Yes, yes, ancient, I know. I live in Cambridge and write songs and record them and when people want to hear them, I play at venues or pubs to them that will hear.

Subud is great in every way for me, it's there as a grounding force in a gusty world. It's personal, inclusive, simple, social, exceptional... you know, the whole thing. Anyway, that feels better, thanks!

P.S Hello Antono, I see you have been here - how are things going? It was good to see you in Vancouver last month, hope you are well bro!

Hello everyone, my name is Helissa. My husband Mark and I were opened in Sacramento, CA, USA in '67; I was 23 (you do the math!). I received a strong latihan immediately and began to receive Guidance in my life right away, so Subud has been at the center of my life for the last 37 years. Guidance was invaluable in raising our two daughters, both of whom are opened and in their right careers-- one is teaching, one is a computer graphic designer. We're all still here in Sacramento.

I majored in psychology in college and have remained fascinated by the subject-- particularly as to how it can help me have a more happy and fulfilled life. I use Guidance to direct me to what to read in psychology and self-help, and to know what's important for me and what's irrelevant. Understanding something about the development of the personality and our dysfunctional ways of coping with problems has helped me greatly in seeking answers through testing because I have a good feel for what questions to ask. In the last few years, I have overcome a long-time tendency toward depression through healing early childhood wounds using the latihan and stopping negative thought patterns with the power of my innerself. I hope to continue to explore and share how psychology and Guidance and living the latihan can all work together to improve the quality of our lives.

You'll be hearing more from me............Helissa

so there's no such thing as coincidence, and as I'm searching for a local sufi group and carrying in that search concerns about the constraints of participating in a narrowly defined group, I accidentally (haha!!) come across something I know nothing about...something called Subud....and as I read and read and read as much as I can find the afternoon slips away...

Sooooo, just wanted to say hello and give thanks for this day's blessings, including those of you whose words have moved and engaged me here.

I have now officially known about subud for ohhhh a good few hours and, God willing, will soon make contact with my local group.

Also, I broke up with my (ex)-girlfriend, so I am making this time maximally for my freedom. I have severe beatings from dancing in a place where punk-bands where playing. I lost my friend but he squatted a house with the local residents anyway (in Utrecht).

Tomorrow I will cook for my first-ever-girlfriend at my place. I have really a nice place. So I'm still in love with life, notwithstanding war, poverty and suppression for many people.
I study dutch law.

Greetings from Subud PR

We have been members of Subud since 1962, opened then (my wife Micaela and I) in Chicago. We came to PR in 1968, joined the group in the island, returned to to New York for a brief stay (4 years) and on our return found the group had disbanded. We are in the process of reactivating the group hoping and praying we may be able to do it. Please wish us well for time is running short. Five members are together on this effort and all of us are on our seventies with me 78 the oldest.

Well I'll try to keep this brief- My name is Lucinda and I like Bella before; am born on October 6th! I'll be 23 this year as last year I was 22! Razz I live in Melbourne in Australia. i have been opened for just over 6 months now, I came to Subud through a ( now ex Razz) boyfriend and subsequently the subud friends I meet through him! At our Janurary congress this year I was tested in as the Melbourne Youth Rep- a position I hope we'll help me to grow and get to know more people-in Subud and beyond.

I'm in my fourth year of study at university, this year and next to go, I'm doing Teaching (secondary) and Health Science (majoring in Psych & Heath)... I really enjoy studying but as I have not done any major travelling I am REALLY looking forward to finishing my studies and heading off to Italy- my dream destination (I'm learning italian slowly!)

I love music, all forms and variations probably with the exception of gangster type rap and dance/techno. I'm learning guitar also VERY slowly. I live in a house above a shop with a friend of 6 or so years and am looking for a new housemate at the moment.

well I'm going to STOP now before I blab on far too much, if you want to talk some more my e-mail is caboosy@gmail.com or check my myspace out! http://myspace.com/2ndtodeath

Hello people

I'm Bachrun. Strangely, for someone who talks too much, I now find I have very little to say.

I'm 22, soon to be 23. I was opened nearly a year ago. My dad's been in Subud for a very long time, and as a Subud kid I experience lots of people telling me that they know my dad, or that they met me when I was very young.

I'm a member of the Birmingham group, where I go during my holidays. I'm a student, studying at Cambridge, so I'm part of the group there too. Just finished my third year (out of four) of a MEng degree.

Found out about this site from Henry Rogers. Hello Henry. I finally signed up. Very Happy

Just been reading through this thread, and saw Stuart Nauen is on here. Met him for the first time at Latihan last night.

One of my main interests is renewable energy/sustainable development, with a specific focus on sociological and economic factors influencing development and implementation of new technologies. Lots of long words, but it's all to do with changing things for the better in ways that people will accept and go along with. Once I finish at uni, this is the type of work I'd like to get into. That or cars. Either fast cars, or environmentally friendly ones. Very Happy

I'm sure I've talked too much already. I can't tell you too much about myself, as then you wouldn't want to talk to me. Razz

Bachrun, totally sympathise with everyone knowing your parents or remembering you as a baby. I remember once walking down a street in California with my sister and a woman randomly stopped us and said, "excuse me, are you Icsan and Roosmiwati's girls?" It ended up being an old Subud friend of theirs but it was really unexpected. It was rather a surprise moving to another country and realising that I had to now create my own identity within the Subud community, and not rely on my family. It's been very good, though.

...........just kidding I can't possibly come onto such a wonderful medium as Subud Life without saying something about my experiences with the big guy.

To be honest I'm a little disappointed that I'm only listed as a newbie - especially considering I was one of the first members of Subud (and Subud Life) ever.

I first received the latihan in 1906 - twenty years before that Bapatak guy - unfortunately his marketing strategy (mysterious Indonesian bloke travels to the west wearing a funny hat) was much more successful than mine (hitch hiking to the Shetland Islands and starting an organic food/drama workshop commune). However I've never held it against him guy and we're still in regular contact........

Anyway someone has now set up a means of communication that reaches the Shetland islands and I can, at long last, begin to share some of my deepest Latihan Kejdjiwaan experiences with a wider audience. I plan to do this through a forum site entitled 'Hamid, myself and I'. The first topic, to be changed hourly, will be "sleeping during latihan - 'deep spiritual cleansing' or 'poor excuse for a kip?' discuss."

Thats all for now guys but check back in a couple of days and I'll tell you about the time Ibu Rahayable insisted my helper card be ripped into smithereens.

Hi, my name is Emmanuel and I'm a canidate helper. <group echos back> Hi, Emmanuel</> Wink

Like Hamid, I'm amused at being a Newbie even when I joined the site in '04.

Hi Maya, Bachrun (I think I know you, were you in San Deigo when you were a little kid? If you were, we played together...), Brianna, Hubert (of the Bright Mind, cool name!), and everyone else,

Having just been through another National Congress I am freshly reminded how even at the ripe old age of 29 (ok, don't you all laugh too hard now) I can still be recognized and greeted solely on the merit of my ancestery (Oh, you're Melinda/Mayrav/Levi/Hummer's son! I've known you since you were this tall!) . And people end up with ancestor issues? I don't get it... Sorry, I digress, but it's fun! (If you knew me since I was that tall, don't you think you wouldn't have to remind me?)

*deep breath*

Who am I? Yes, that's right. Emmanuel aka Eman, Emmy, E, etc. (no, etc isn't one of my nicknames, but you get the point) Pleshe. Descendent of two olde tyme Subudians, Mary/Mayrav/Melinda Wallis (the Subud USA national office manager formerly known as Pleshe) and Robert/Levi/Patrick/Levi/Humphrey/Hummer Pleshe.

Grew up for a while in Southern California, Los Angeles, San Deigo, Santa Cruz before moving up to Washington, near enough to Seattle.

Played alot of LARPs (live action role playing), had fun. Got married, had a gorgeous baby girl (she's downstairs with my mom now doing story time). Got divorced, but never fear, things are alright. I'm married again, it's great.

I work as a Computer Technician, somewhat specialized, and can explain more, but not now.

My time for writing this has just run out as I realize it's time to tuck said daughter, Rachel, in.

Love,
Emmanuel

Hi Emmanuel

I think you've got the wrong Bachrun there. I've never been to San Deigo in my life. I went to Texas when I was a baby, but that's the only time I've been to America.

Good to meet you (albeit online and for the first time) anyway though.

Waw! Your dad managed to change his name once more than mine! That's quite an accomplishment. But wait a minute, you've repeated one of the names twice, so I guess it's only 5 names each.

Post subject: who i am - sjahari
hi,
i just found the little nudge to introduce myself.
I am Sjahari. I already posted a poem here, called "Discovery Island" and there is a radio program too which i think will be repeated by Esaias.
Besides writing and reading poetry, my next best and biggest passion, in fact the first actually, is a modern improvisational dance practise I am intensely involved in called "Contact Improvisation". Anyone else here do this? This is a beautiful community that I have and have connections everywhere in the world through it. In some ways very much like the subud community. I dance 6 to 8 hours a week. sometimes more. would dance all day everyday if I could.

I also have to make a living, and to do that I am a Medical Doctor. Traditional, straight and narrow, and dont talk to me about anything wonky please. I eat organic food and brown rice and lentils sometimes, but only at my Contact retreats. I also pretend i am an alternative guy when I am there. Well. When I am there I am. Totally. It is a total other thing. anyway. Specialist in Internal medicine. Work in the ICU and hospital sort of thing. Dont eat lentil soup in the hospital. Also do office specialty in Rheumatology.

I also have another designation. Many people know me as "Lavinia's Dad" and in Subud circles that is often how I am introduced. It bugs me a little not having an identity of my own. but there it is.

so thats a little about me but not everything. My next radio poetry reading is going to be called "After the Touch" and it will be poetry I have written related to my dance practise.

Hello : I am Susilowati, from Chile.
I was opened in 1969. I have made my life in Subud. Married to a Subud helper and 5 kids in Subud.
I want to say that I have gone through a loooong process in Subud.
It has been full of surprises and good advice for my life. There have been lots of tests too, which have been always good lessons. This spiritual path, changed my destiny. I am glad I had enough patience until I could see some fruits of the latihan.

Very Happy

I'm Valencia... I'm 29 years old, have three kids (11, 10 and 8 years old), I currently live in Durham, North Carolina, USA, but I'm originally from London. I am half Irish, and half Colombian and my parents are in Subud.

I enjoy good music, photography, being silly, making fun of myself, painting & drawing (I'm not that good, but in my head I am so awesome), a bit of intelligent, sarcastic humor (check out: www.xkcd.com), dancing, and lots of things... in the hope people will realize I am weird.

My dream is to become a ninja and randomly drop from ceilings. I haven't tested this, I'm not sure if it's my talent, but I see all the ninjas you guys can't.

Esias: I'm emailing you right now with a radioshow I made a while back, and another one which is more of a compilation of music I love.

Hi everybody... my name's Bucho, and I'm very new to the world of Subud. In fact, I haven't even been opened yet - that's not going to take place until January sometime. I'm not a terribly spiritual person, but it is something that I do have a lot of interest in, and so I decided to give it a go, and see what kind of experiences I have.

About me... I'm a network engineer by day and aspiring author by night. Also... I'm a post junkie... this will be the third message board that I post on. Anyways, that's about all for now. You'll probably be reading a lot of my posts in the future.

My name is Neven, I was born and grew up in Croatia now living in Andaluzia, Spain in a town of Orgiva. It was here that I was open only a 2-3 months ago and been a happy Latihan doer ever since Smile
I live an unstable life but one that does not lack dinamic and excitment. I'm a juggler and a jewellery maker (making things out of silver plated wire). My pasions are writeing (just starting), filmakeing (...well...v'got me self a half decent dv camera), philosophy, and from a year ago healthy way of living. I've made my self into an experiment as to how vibrant can my life become through "proper" nutrients and feeling good. Results are promising Smile
I'm 28 and I just love the see. Don't swim so good though, but it's something that I'll have plesure to work on next summer...and I'm an optimist.
In thruth I'd love to blab away on all kind of diferent subjects and I guess I will on some other thread.
I'm happy to find this site, thank you. many hugs and good luck.
Intent on loving you all Smile)

hi, my name is Arthur aka Tuur or a door.....
sometimes I am open and sometimes I slam in your face.
It has nothing to do with being violent, more with my blunt honesty.

I did subud for 20 years, quit for a year and lately it seems, that it is coming on my path again.
I do miss the energy I feel in the latihan. I don't miss the liars who pretend to do latihan.
Or those people who are nice in my face and laugh in my back.

huh, look at me.....after a year I AM STILL MAD!

I live in full commitmend which in my case means; I have no work for 3 years now(do work sometimes as a handyman/painter/frisbeeteacher/whatever needed...)
and have no money, most of the time, but my beliefs are so strong that I am not worried about food or bills.
This last month, I had no money to pay the rent or the elektrobill or to buy food.
and what happend was, i think it is cool, but i lost my appetite for food.
I ate very little this last month.
And when I was hungry, i got money to buy some food.....

And that always happens...
When there is a need, there is providence

So I don't have to worry...

Ofcourse my story goes on but you can pm me for more info.
Later,
Arthur

Alright?
I'm Matt, a subud member since exactly one while ago and a member of the group in sheffield.
I'm:
a musician and singer of questionable quality
an "erratic" dancer
dangerous with fire poi
a service engineer for a company that fixes fume extractors (yawn... i know)
paid too much for what i do but not complaining
currently teaching myself Francais et/y Espanyol (see what i did there) with varying sucess
a good climber
and a fearless snowboarder, with ambitions to teach sometime

Signed up to this because i feel i should and long sundays leave me with little to do! (i joke - i want to meet more people who share the same gift i've been lucky enough to find in this life)
especially french or spanish people so i can practice what i've learnt (or is that learned? i'm never sure)
Anyway i have a job that takes me around the country and i'm not afraid of ruthlessly using the directory to get to different groups!
so expect a vist in the future

lotas love and kisses where appropriate

Matt (for now...)

P.s
Love the radio Esiais but Meet Joe Black is the worst film ever made ever.

Obviously never attended TUNIVERSITY!

Later dude, glad you're finding your feet with Subud, oh and if you wanna try your hand at broadcasting sometime, let me know and I'll set it up.

Strictly no Eminem - I really will boot you off the broadcast for that kind of violation.

This is a wonderful site! Thanks a lot to those who make it happen! My name is Michael Menzies, originally from Vancouver, BC, but now I live in Vienna, Austria... the story that brought me here is much too long to include in this introduction! I'm round about 38 years old and have been in Subud since 91' - and what a wonderful experience and expression it has been so far, especially in fulfilling my role as a local helper. I teach ESL in Vienna and study religion as well, and have a passion for Shaolin kung fu; so, if anyone out there wants to chat about religion/spirituality or Kung fu, please give me a message. Plus, if you are planning on coming to Vienna, let me know and I can helpl you out with accommodation. Blessing and love, Michael Menzies
