Any news on this from Indonesian members?

Is there any way we can send money safely and securely, and which agencies are in the area providing emergency aid?

Latest news from Jogjakarta:

Recently, the Susila Dharma Indonesia team still in Jogjakarta since Sunday afternoon. The youth co-coordinator who lived in Jogjakarta also took part in handling of the horrifying disaster together with Subud Jogjakarta and Central of Java. Now, they make camp in Prambanan.

Damage in the Latihan Hall only at the ceilings but there were 7 Subud members that lose their houses and the team will visit them one by one.

Up to Monday morning more than 4000 people were killed (according to Department of Social) and thousands injured. Most of people lived outdoors or in a tent because they are still trauma. Rain in the last two nights made the situation more difficult for them. Situation in Jogjakarta still mess, student couldn’t go to school and many patients neglected. Help and volunteer had been given but they were still needing many matters especially blankets, tents, food and medicine.

Thank you Ariana, Rena and Luluk. I'm sorry to hear about another horrific disaster in Indonesia.

I'm sure all of us will appreciate the need to make an immediate donation.

Is it quicker to send donations direct to your bank in Indonesia, or through local SD groups?

UK donors can send online donations through Susila Dharma Britain and get tax relief - 21% is added to your donation if you are a UK tax payer.

I wish you all the best in your efforts.

Dear Martin,
Ariana Susanti will comeback to Jakarta this afternoon but some others still stayed. She will give complete report to all. Also she said that it doesn't matter to send donations direct to the bank in Indonesia (don't forget to use the switch code) or through local SD groups.
Last night, SDI team had a meeting with UN and others NGO, discuss and make a plan together for recovery.

Thank you very much for all supports.

Message from Rasmini Gardiner, June 2, 2006:

Concerned that any donations we wanted to give to the earthquake victims of Yogya would not reach the persons in need, a group of us in Bali put our money together which I took to central Java this Wednesday, May 31st, and Thursday, June 1st I met up with the Princesses from the Palace of Solo who with our money were able to buy more than 300 tents, floor mats, blankets, sarongs, sandals, food packages, medicines and shovels at lower than normal prices . Many of these items we were able to buy at cost, the suppliers donating their profit to the victims. We then took these items into villages and areas that since the earthquake no one, not one doctor, official or aid worker had visited. We managed to supply three villages on Wednesday and Thursday.

This is a tip of the iceberg. The size and scope of this earthquake is more than horrifying. It numbs the mind and the feelings. We drove for hours and hours past what looked like a sea of flattened timber. How anyone survived I do not know. In some areas the damage is sporadic - 100% collapsed houses next to new cement structures that don't even have any cracks in the walls.

However, out in the village areas where houses are older there is total destruction. According to Dr. Micheal Ricos, an aid worker who worked in Aceh when the tsunami first hit, the situation in Yogya is far, far worse, hitting many more people over a much wider area.

The media is losing interest and the UN report states that it is under control. This is total nonsense. Yes, aid is pouring in, yes there are centres ("Poskos" as they call them ) set up dotted around the area but aid is not getting to the people. The centres are empty, no lines waiting for help . The main reason being that the Governor of Java has instructed the Poskos centres to only hand out supplies, food and medicine to people who come forward with their Indonesian identity card or a letter from the local "Lurah" (head of each village) stating their identity. Most identity cards are lying beneath a pile of rubble and the Lurah is either dead, run away or there is no paper for him to write on.

Within these small villages the survivors are organizing themselves and when we arrived with our trucks our donations were calmly and gratefully disbursed evenly among the villagers. However, they are very hungry and very traumatized . Many are injured. There are doctors in the areas at the centres, but these villagers do not want to leave their homes for fear of loosing what little belongings they have left, so they sit in front of their rubble and wait. Since the earthquake, it has rained almost every day and night, so they sit on the wet ground.

The Princesses of Solo will continue every few days to drive out to the areas we covered on Wednesday and Thursday and also other areas not yet reached, with trucks of goods, including more tents, mats, food and medicines. We are holding fundraising concerts here in Bali - the proceeds of which I will take back to central Java and together with the Princesses buy more of what is needed and take this to the villagers.

If you have any feeling to help us in helping the people of central Java, I guarantee your donation will go directly to these people who before this disaster where already poor and now have nothing. Every rupiah is used for buying goods for them; our personal travel costs and hotel bills we cover ourselves. Our little team is by no means the only group raising funds for the earthquake victims- Red Cross, Oxfam, etc. are all in the area and if you feel more comfortable with these established aid organisations that is totally understandable. I just thought I'd let you know what we are doing in case you want to join us.

With love and very best wishes

Rasmini Gardiner
