I am going to legally add my Subud name, Lucas, to my birth name after Ramadhan. I have a really good feeling about it, and I was wondering if there's anything to it.

If anyone has any stories about how legally changing to or including their Subud name affected them - I'd really be interested in hearing them.

Thanks,
Lucas

After I was opened, I remember asking somebody, "How come so many people who do latihan have unusual names?" They explained how it was about 'vibes', with some vibes possibly being more or less suitable for a person's inner self. I requested a Subud name pretty soon after, and I'm very happy with it. One thing I still notice, even after 20 years, is that it feels sort of 'joyful' when somebody greets me by name, as if they're saying hello to the 'inner me'. As soon the new name arrived, I stopped using my birth name, but waited 7 years before making the change legal.

Hey there Lucas,

Is that Mr Schulman, whom I spent a very scary night with, driving a car with no lights, horn or windscreen wipers, a petrol engine full of diesel, being towed by a 3 foot towrope in a fierce gale, our forheads pressed up against the windscreen to see the blurr of brake lights so I could pull up the handbrake, whilst you asked me "When was the last time you were really scared?"

Anyway, I'll never forget you, as we had just met when that happened. I wrote an article on my name change for the UK SYA bulletin, Fresh Rabbit, which I was editing at the time. It was called "Headlights and Sparkplugs" because when I received the name from Ibu Rahayu, I had very few associations with the name, which is a really good thing. It has changed my life, allong with the latihan, though as with all good progress in the latihan, it is subtle, and leaves no trace, so you forget how messed up you used to be, and only realise it when you test about it.

Go for it. Changing legally was a pain for me in England

Lots of love

Lucas

Hi Lucas,

I have just changed my name by Deed Poll and it feels very empowering (not sure if thats the right word!)

I got my name in March last year and though friends and acquaintances have called me by my new name it felt that something somehow was missing. I found it very difficult to distinguise who I was and felt that I wasn't completely surrendered to my new name and its meaning. When people call me by my old name it makes me flinch. It is inevitable though that my family will not call me by my new name and this is ok.

The only hurdle to get over now is making sure I let everyone know about the name change ie Bank etc! I have written 9 letters so far today!!!

Lots of love Jovita

Hi Jovita,

I too whince on the very rare occassion when someone calls me by my old name, Tom. It used to really unsettle me when it happened a lot. How strange that is. Fortunately, no-one knows me as Tom anymore, except when I return to Suffolk or run into an old schoolfriend from there.

See you soon and best wishes,

Lucas
