more from Subud USA e-mails:

KALIMANTAN:
from Mansur Geiger, Rungan Sari: 29/12/04
"Ibu Rahayu was here in Rungan Sari at the time , we have not been affected physically in any way by the quake and waves. The Subud members in Medan are safe.
Muti had news that the Subud house in Colombo was not damaged, Colombo is on the west side of Sri Lanka and basically protected.
Gay Thavisin was in Puket on holiday and at the time the wave struck was scheduled to get on a boat to visit one of the small island resorts. Fortunately she was late and missed the boat, she and family are OK.
The devastation and suffering is staggering in Ache, national media is estimating the death toll will be far higher than what has been reported to date. This morning they showed images of a remote village that had be totally flattened, the population had been 90,000 and they believe very few people survived. From Mansur

Dear sisters and brothers,

We are all reeling from the devastation of the earthquake and tsunami disaster. Relief efforts are ongoing at many levels. The most effective way to support the emergency relief is to donate to agencies such as the Red Cross/Red Crescent, and UNICEF, Oxfam, Save the Children and so on, either directly, OR through your local SD National organizations who may have plans for country wide donations. Please check with your local SD.
We anticipate that our SD organizations will be more involved in long term work in the future. We will keep you posted. In the meantime, our inner attention, love, empathy and solidarity may be helpful in supporting the people who have lost all.

Here is some information from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India.

FROM SRI LANKA

from Robert Goonetilleke, Sri Lanka : 29/12/04

"By the grace of God every Subud member was spared. Those who lived by the coast had minimal damage to property and our Subud house escaped too. Being only a stone throw from the ocean this is a near miracle. As a nation we are devastated by the loss of life(the numbers keep rising) and property. It is a reminder how little control we have over the forces of nature. To even have an inkling of the forces that were released one has span a distance of nearly four thousand miles to the eastern coast of Africa where a tidal wave reached the coast some hours later. The eastern coast of India and Sri Lanka received the worst of it. The Tsunami that hit coast arrived at nearly 900 kilometers per hour. The number of missing will never be accounted as whole fishing villages in the eastern coast  with boats and people vanished from the face of the earth. Today is the 47th aniversary of the day that the latihan was brought to Sri Lanka and we have cancelled all celebration. That day in 1957 one of the worst rain storms hit Sri lanka and today it has been raining since morning and all the rain in the world cannot wash away the grief and sorrow of those who have lost their loved ones.”

*SDI RECOMMENDS: SDI has not heard back from SD Sri Lanka about whether and how they can forward donations to the local Red Cross agencies.
Until then, please donate via your national SD organizations who can forward to Red Cross agencies, and also UNICEF, Oxfam, Save the Children . OR Donate direct to these agencies.

FROM SD INDIA

“Soidarity in Grief” from Bella, Chair, SD India.

Dear friends in Subud,

We are still depressed with the recent tragedy in South India. The tsunami has struck us so unaware. The word itself is so new to all of us. So you can imagine the direct, unexpected experience of it. So many people died whose bodies are yet to arrive in our shores. Many children have perished because of the Vacation season. The schools are closed and the parents allow them to play in the open space. All of them have been taken away by the waves. In Tamilnadu alone it is estimated that around 7400 have died.

So many of our fishermen died leaving their families.  It seems that the previous day, 25th December 2004, the fishing community experienced an unusual fish catch and they were extremely happy about it. The next day they hoped for more and so took all their relatives for help in fishing, hoping to recover lots of fish harvest for the next weekend, the celebration of New Year. With this happy mood many went for fishing the very next day. But it is to meet their end.

The media would have given sufficient coverage and the news. Actually the death rate is underestimated. It is much more in some of the villages. Around six to seven villages in Tamilnadu   have been completely washed out. The worst part is that the adults saw for themselves their children were being taken away by the monstrous waves. The treasure of the poor families “ the children” the future bread winners, the potential earners of the family are all lost.

Subud India members are requested to contribute to the relief needs of the suffering community which is very close to all of us. The Chennai group is being requested to explore any possibility of relief work that they would like to take up. There are two or three agencies based in Chennai, which are being asked to collaborate with SD-India to do some rehabilitation services. SD-India has already released some amount to these agencies.

SD - India thanks each and every country where the Subud members  expressed their concern to us. We also share the same solidarity with our neighboring countries like, Indonesia, Srilanka and Malaysia.

Some of the women in my group are going to get together to do a special latihan for the victims, those who wish to do a speical latihan at the same time can join in at 9:00 p.m. pacific standard time on Thursday Dec 30th. (tomorrow)

The first update that the Subud USA office sent out:

-----------------------------------------------------------

December 28,2004
About the disaster:
All we have are bits of news about the Subud people:

Thailand:
The Subud members in Thailand are ok, comes third hand,on Sunday night, from a Subud members’ friend inn Thailand:

Java:
Rahayu's secretary says they are fine in Java.

Sri Lanka:

From Olivia Panopoulos: Halimah Martin has news from Robert Goonetilleke out of Sri Lanka: (perhaps he has thought to notify others...)

His home is in the mountains so he's ok. no harm to any Subud folk. The Subud house had a retaining wall that held back a lot of water but sustained some relatively small amount of seeping in. Robert's brother, with his family and grandchildren, was vacationing at a beach. They were in a bungalow and managed to climb on the roof to safety! Although the brother is in the hospital with some sort of injury, he and all are all right.

Thank God for everything...

And from our Zonal Rep Julia Hurd:

With such sad news of Sunday's earthquake and tsunamis in Asia many would like to help. About the best we can do for immediate relief is donate to international aid organizations such as the Red Cross. Meantime, SDI is making inquiries and other SD organizations are on the alert. Information from them will be forthcoming as it becomes available. SD's can help with long-term recovery but not emergency relief.

I was glad to read the new latihan hall in Sri Lanka is okay. There was an excellent article about Ibu Rahayu visiting there when it first opened last September in the Asia Pacific Newsletter and Subud Canada made a donation towards its construction. (And Kumari Beck was born there.)

love,
Julia

As we learn more, we will send out messages.

God bless us all, every one,
Melinda at Subud USA

------------------------------------------------------------------

Additionally I heard from friends in Jakarta last night and this morning and they seem to be fine.

Hi everyone,

A Subud friend sent me this today. I thought some of you might be interested to read it. It mirrors the premonitions I've been receiving--hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, etc., in the near future. It's easy to feel helpless in the face of the rumblings of Mother Earth. I would like to think that my latihan, in some small way, makes a difference in the state of the planet. (It makes a difference to MY state, so I'll keep on with it anyway!)

What do you think? What is the power of the latihan outside of our own individual lives? Have you ever received guidance along these lines? Does the weather reflect the state of the people, as some say? Are these omens for our times, or separate events from us? Has anyone received something specific about the tsunami and the other disasters happening now? Helissa

Here's the message that came:

Urgent call from the Mayan elders of Guatemala 1/10/2004

Through the ancient techniques of divination and tools of prophecy, the
Mayan elders are calling forth to humanity at THIS TIME to pay closer
attention to the messages being sent forth by the mother earth and to
immediately take the actions they have been calling for, to unite in an
effort to bring balance again upon our planet. The recent destruction that
manifested in Indonesia is predicted to now occur rapidly upon five
continents of the earth. This message is not meant to induce fear, to the
contrary, it is a call for bravery and for action. The elders are concerned
about what has been presented in their recent divinations and they call to
all humanity to warn their leaders and to work very hard at a spiritual
level to prevent the impending destruction. This message, verified and
brought forth by various Mayan elders in Guatemala, is for all of humanity.
The hurricanes in the US and the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia have
been warnings and we must now pay attention or the possibilities of floods
in Europe, Los Angeles, earthquakes and other efforts of the mother earth
to awaken us will manifest quickly.

There is a specific call for people around the world to join in prayer,
meditation or whatever method of spirituality one engages in to unite on
January 18th at the time of their local sunset (approx 6:00PM). This date
is (9) Keme according to the sacred Mayan Cholq'ij calendar(more info on
calendar available at: http://www.sacredroad.org) and has the potential for
protecting humanity from disaster.

There will be many major ceremonies in the Mayan communities for this
purpose. An open invitation is extended to humanity that wish to join the
Mayan people for the Waxa'qib B'atz' ceremonies on February 12th in
Guatemala.
Again, this is a strong message, not meant to drive us to react in fear, for
this will only negatively impact the level of destruction and our own
circumstance. This is the opportunity for humanity to rise to the occasion
and come together along the strong lines that unite us and overcome the
obstacles that divide us.
Please distribute this message widely.

Message issued by Mayan elders in Guatemala and delivered via:
Carlos Barrios, Mayan Ajq'ij, Antigua, Guatemala
Adam Rubel, Co-Director, Saq' Be': Organization for Mayan and Indigenous
Spiritual Studies, http://www.sacredroad.org

Hi, Helissa,

You ask =
"What do you think? What is the power of the latihan outside of our own individual lives? Have you ever received guidance along these lines? Does the weather reflect the state of the people, as some say? Are these omens for our times, or separate events from us? Has anyone received something specific about the tsunami and the other disasters happening now?"

I think that such matters are just superstition. That is to say, they could be genuine for all I really know, but if there were some way of casting cosmic bets - and some way of having such queries answered - then I'd lay heavy odds against the outcome that the physical world can be influenced from 'inside' human beings. I believe prayer can be very useful for people themselves, but I don't believe that prayer or the latihan can influence physical events. I don't believe in omens or prophecies of any kind. Once again, I know that this skeptical opinion could be wrong, but my own experience of life (so far) is inconsistent with the alternative view.

Best wishes,
Merin

Dear Merin,

Witnessing your state, I and my cohorts have decided upon an emergency action: we have arranged for you to be kidnapped and transported to a sacred cave deep in the Outback. You will be allowed to take only the clothes on your back and a holy message stick bearing the Subud symbol. When you arrive, give the message stick to the Elder Council, who will grant you dispensation to enter the Sacred Dreamtime. There you will receive instruction in the ways of the shaman. You will receive knowledge concerning the things that are hidden. You will be instructed by your guardian ancestor spirits on how to contact the rock spirits, the plant spirits, and the animal spirits-- the Ant, Grasshopper, Emu, Eagle, Crow, Parrot, Wallaby, Kangaroo, Lizard, and Snake. You will meet your own totem animal spirit and become empowered by it. All of this will bring about a deep communication between you and Mother Earth and a better understanding of your own nature. When you return to us, you will be stronger in wisdom. We will say, "There goes a truly 'Clever Man'."

I can't say precisely when this will happen. I'd advise you to put your affairs in order and say your "goodbyes" to your mates and loved ones. We plan to take you by surprise, because we know that you will not take this warning seriously. How it all will happen must remain a mystery.

Have a nice trip!

Procedures For Underground

The country beneath
the earth has a green sun
and the rivers flow backwards;

the trees and rocks are the same
as they are here, but shifted.
Those who live there are always hungry;

from them you can learn
wisdom and great power,
if you can descend and return safely.

You must look for tunnels, animal
burrows or the cave in the sea
guarded by the stone man;

when you are down you will find
those who were once your friends
but they will be changed and dangerous.

Resist them, be careful
never to eat their food.
Afterwards, if you live, you will be able

to see them when they prowl as winds,
as thin sounds in our village. You will
tell us their names, what they want, who

has made them angry by forgetting them.
For this gift, as for all gifts, you must
suffer: those from the underland

will be always with you, whispering their
complaints, beckoning you
back down; while among us here

you will walk wrapped in an invisible
cloak. Few will seek your help
with love, none without fear.

Merin,

So you're a willing traveler, then. It's right for you to embark on this hero's journey to the unknown places, for that is where you will find your power. It would not be wrong for you to be afraid, for monstrous things live there--to be wrestled with and tamed and transformed to do your bidding. Suffering? Yes, there's always that; there's always a price to pay. Oh, but the reward! That makes the whole adventure worth the price and more. And, you are not without companions, spiritual guides to map your way. And, what about your light? Not everyone has such a gift to take with him when he descends underground, you know. Yes, I think you're more prepared than most to travel there. That should give you courage to take the first step.

Dear Helissa & Merin,

So H believes certain prophecies & M is a sceptic?

I think all we can do is to try & help those afflicted & move on.

A lot of traditional wisdom is to do with renewing the earth's fertility continually as against exploiting it.

Some of the things Bapak said - unless your ear was attuned - sounded right out of left field. But I suspect, if we try & do "development" like he suggested in Kalimantan, we won't turn this earth into a vast wasteland.

Perhaps we need to see ancient truths through modern eyes?

Regards,

Ismail Cool

Well, I think what's happening in quantum physics recently is bringing us around full circle to some of the ancient understandings. Some of the scientists are sounding awfully metaphysical these days.

As to us and the weather, here's part of an interview with Deepak Chopra on The Larry King Show"

CHOPRA: "...... You know, the idea here is that if we
quieten the turbulence in our collective mind and heal the rift in our
collective soul, could that have an effect on nature's mind, if nature has a
mind? The gaia hypothesis says nature does have a mind, that the globe is
conscious. So a critical mass of people praying or a critical mass of people
collectively engaging in meditation could conceivably, even from modern
physics point of view, through non-local interactions, actually simmer down
the turbulence in nature. And there are precedents for this in all the
religions. That when you pray, that you quieten your mind, that you go into
deep silence, you change the way nature behaves. That it's not a
cause/effect relationship; it's the inseparability of one consciousness that
manifests itself in the diversity of creation."

"I think that such matters are just superstition."

Oh dear Merin,

Done any testing lately?

It looks to me like you did not really win that one.

Anyway, why do we, "in Subud" need to discard anyone's beliefs whether they are superstitious, religious or scientific?

We do something which must be looked upon as superstitious, unscientific, and religious itself. And we don't have all the answers-don't seem to have many at all actually.

I like the lovely story about Bapak and the weather.
If anyone is gong to get the elements to bend to his efforts, then it should be Bapak, or he must have been a lot less significant than some of us give him credit for.
Asked about the weather, Bapak is supposed to have said something about the clouds having a duty to do.

As Bapaks plane few off into the west for he last time here, I watched as it disappeared, and in came a weather front which was windy and wet, eliminating the balmy weather we had enjoyed during Bapak's visit.

Coincidence? Really????

Regards, and don't forget to pray for good weather.
