An inconsistent viewpoint and take on my life as a material being in a materialistic world.

"So what if I do?"

I can be somewhat naïve on occasion.

I go looking for “life-prompts” in my day to day activities.

You know the ones I mean; you’re watching telly and this guy's talking about recycled card in cereal boxes. You’ve been thinking about your effect on the environment recently and you go to yourself: 'Yeah that makes so much sense. I know exactly what this dude's on about'. 'I'm gonna go write to cereal-box makers and ask them what they're doing for the environment.' You know real James Redfield type stuff.

I do this myself all the time.

I take them to mean I should be doing x, y or z with my life. X, y or z being whatever seems to be contained within this “life prompt”, a hopelessly subjective concept.

But then my intellect counters with something like this: 'How can you actually be conscious of non-tangible "prompts" taking place, while still allowing them to provide you with some sort of sadly misinformed life-direction?'

Then another side counters the first and goes: 'So what if I do?' 'As I said before: I'm not doing anything else with my life. Why not follow whatever x, y or z is suggesting. If it's not doing harm, makes sense to me and has ultimately positive aims, why not try to do something different?'

And please do not even attempt to entertain me with the idea that I am somehow already living a worthwhile existence. I'm working for somebody else, getting paid what this person thinks I am worth, living in an abode which consumes resources taken from my environment which is then soon after disposed back into my environment, more often than not in hopelessly unsustainable manner...

What's that?

Sounds like I’m mentally ill?

Whose interests are at heart when that DSM book is updated anyway?

Hi Russell!

I don't think your abode is consuming oh-so-many non-renewable resources which the world can't do without. After all, only one of you drives, for goodness sake!

As for the life prompts, I think in our proud Subud mysticism, they are known as desires. One of the goals of the Latihan is to make the desires the slaves of the soul, so that you control them and they don't control you. Once one understands them, one can know which are useful, and which are coming from one's overactive imagination. Then one can use them to do something useful with one's life Embarassed Laughing Razz

Russell,

The Spiritual Warrior must hone his skills of discrimination, which emanate from his innerself, so that the Enemy Nafsu cannot distract him from his true path.

(which just means that I agree with Mahmud Henry Laughing )
