Hey all!

As anyone who knows me will attest, I am a pretty hard core Harry Potter fan, and this July is the BIG one. Smile The new movie and the final (LAST!) book will come out within a week of each other. And I am going to be there to witness, experience and document first hand! I'm so excited!

Naturally I couldn't just go traipsing off to the U.K. to spend all my time in conferences and discussion panels (and parties and banquets and all-night reading groups!!!). I have to do a little sightseeing. A little traveling about.

Of course, as an impoverished film student living in a foreign country I have very little to go on, so, I thought I'd give my Subud family a shout-out to see what you can advise. If anyone knows of a cheap place to stay, or can offer a place to stay, or just wants to perhaps hook up and have a little chitchat while I'm in the country, I would be delited to hear from you!

Here are the dates and where I will (or would like to) be.
12-16 July: London
16-19 July: Brighton/Eastbourne type area
19-22 July: London
22-23 July: York (?) It looks cool. Smile
23-27 July: Edinburgh

Cheers, Beers and Aroha, Everybody!

Maya

Well, I normally live in the UK (but I'm actually in Christchurch, and you're going over there from Wellington!)

You could try Loudwater Farm or the Amadeus Centre as places to stay, or theres a house I think in Norwich...There is a Youth Hostel, budget string of really cheap places across Britain you could look at. Check out:
http://www.yha.org.uk/, or http://www.syha.org.uk/SYHA/web/site/home/home.asp
or http://www.thebackpacker.net/

I s'pose I'd recommend, as places to visit:

Bath because its so pretty and theres stuff near like the Avebury stone circle, and its got the baths, good restaurants, a (slightly small) subud group. Scotland is really amazing (and very different to the rest of the UK) theres a big Subud place in Perth, I think. I have been to Edinburgh ages ago and it is very nice too. Loch Lomond is a stunning place, just outside of Glasgow, and there's plenty where that came from in the rest of Scotland. Cornwall is great, errmm...Dublin, over the sea? Stratford-on-Avon?

Man, we have bad timing! Smile Hope you're enjoying Christchurch. Smile
I am planning a day trip to Bath--might have to make it two days if it's that lovely. Smile I really wish I could have several months to look around, but I'll have to content myself with a couple of weeks for now. Smile
Thanks for the advise on places to stay--I'll look into them. Smile

Hi Maya

Bath is a uniquely interesting city to walk around. Not just for the obvious places like Royal Crescent and other such Georgian architecture. The Pulteney Bridge and Weir down by the Avon river, a short walk from the Roman Baths, is a great place to take it easy if the weather is nice. The Roman Baths are worth a look, but a bit of a rip-off, the new Thermae Bath Spa might be interesting (only if you are loaded and want to freshen up). And avoid the eateries outside the Roman Baths they're for sucker tourists. Frankly you don't need more than a day.

If you fancy things like Stonehenge and Avebury they require more planning and are not just extras to fit within one day.

If you plan on staying longer in the general region of the SW - West Midlands I'd go to Stratford Upon Avon for another day of quaint English touristy spots. Wink

Britain might be a small place, but getting around transport wise is as though you are in Xinjiang Western China. You'll be suprised how tiring it is to get from London, Bath, York and Edinburgh. You're more likely to die on the trains these days, which is not a complete joke. So, if I were you, I'd take a cheap flight and fly by www.easyjet.com to Edinburgh after seeing Bath. You can fly from Bristol (airport outside the city), a short coach ride from Bath.

Ooo, I'm so glad I posted on here! Getting so many good ideas. I had planned on training around, but I just looked on easyjet and those flights are cheaper then taking the rails! I may have to completely restructure my trip now. Razz

Hey Maya

Don't want to be a bore... but pack light and expect the odd delay. Easyjet have about 2 engineers for their whole fleet. Razz I had to wait in Salzburg after Innsbruck while they flew over one of their bods to come and fix the plane standing on the tarmac. Very Happy Its not that bad, just vary what you do transport wise. www.nationalexpress.co.uk are reliable and you can do these wildly cheap funfares, its just not much fun on a coach over longer distances.

P.S. I am only being nice, because I'll probably be asking you a thousand questions in a couple if years when I check out New Zealand. Wink

And I will be here waiting to answer those questions. Smile

Yeah, the packing light thing is going to be a bit tricky. Smile I'm going to the states first for 3 1/2 weeks and then straight on to London, and...yeah, it's gonna be tricky. Ah well.
