OK - ladies and gentlemen, Stewart, here's how I did it. It should be about the same for any release of the iBook G4, although other apple models would be different. (For these try finding instructions on dismantling them on the internet.)

0) shut down, take out the battery and unplug the power lead.

1) remove the ibook's top case. This is held on by four screws on the side of the screen and must be removed with allen keys (hex wrench in American?). The case itself is a bit tricky to prize off the screen as it has catches all the way around moulded into the plastic, but you can gently ease a corner off and work around the screen from that. Try not to bend the screen or the electronics around the rim.

2) underneath the moulded plastic transparent apple logo, is a paper-thin translucent piece of white plastic. cut this away.

3) print out a black and white Subud symbol (see attached) on good quality paper, with an inkjet printer on high quality mode. (Laser print will be rubbish.) I used photo paper. You want the black to be solidly black. The symbol is then taped between the transparent apple symbol and the light source. It is not necessary to cut out the white parts of the Subud symbol.

4) screw back together, and you have the ultimate status symbol! Bling bling!

Ah yes - and if you do it, try to tape it so the symbol is upright. i'm starting to fret over the lopsidedness of mine. PS - you should probably need to add some extra black background to the image above so that it masks the transparent apple completely.
