World Subud Association A BRIEF REPORT ON BIG 2002 ( 2724 Reads )

Laurencio Young, ISC Chairman writes:

So, get ready for Spain! Yes, the next World Congress will be held in Granada in July 2005, as the testing the International Helpers did at BIG 2002 in England on the afternoon of August 12th in front of hundreds of members clearly showed, and so it was unanimously decided by the World Council. The head of the Organising Committee will be appointed by ISC, following testing by the IHs of the Area, at the Spanish National Congress that will be held from December 6th to 8th, at a location still to be decided.

All members resident in Spain are invited to put their names forward for this position and/or to be part of the team.

The Council meeting in Sheffield also decided to approve the ISC accounts up to August 15th, 2001 and the Bali World Congress accounts that have been duly audited and show a surplus of US$ 104,427 as previously reported. A substantial portion of this surplus was already spent to pay debts of the WSA towards members of the former World Council and to refund members who had booked for but weren't able to attend the Congress in Bali, as well as some other past expenses. All of this has already been accounted for in the ISC accounts up to December 2001 and the first semester of the current year, both published in www.subudworldnews.com and the newsletter SubudWorldNews.pdf.

Among other resolutions taken in Sheffield it was agreed to publish a book containing advice of Ibu Rahayu to members, in an effort to relieve Ibu from some of the burden she has with so many letters that reach her office every day. The International Helpers will also try to help her in this regard, and will only deliver to her matters that they are not able or don't feel able to deal with. A team was appointed to update the Advice & Guidance for Helpers, and it was also decided to appoint working parties to study the convenience or not to affiliate Subud to the U.N., and the affiliation of some Subud organizations to the WSA, as is the case of SIHA for example. After testing it was decided that the next meeting of the Council will be held in Area III - the Americas - hopefully coinciding with the Pan-American Gathering in 2003.

Many other resolutions were taken at this meeting, as you will be able to read in the Minutes. It was attended by all the members of the Council but one (Harfijah Chung for SYA), and by nearly 1,100 members from all over the world, though mainly from the United Kingdom as they also had their National Congress together with the Zone 3 Gathering. The sessions of the Council were remarkably harmonious as if we inherited and profited from the harmony reached by the former Council at their 2000 meeting in Mina Clavero. The Wing Chairs agreed to work closely together, to produce a video magazine, and even to visit countries and groups together, as they saw that this is the best way to work and to spread their message.

Following the decision taken in Bali, the ISC Media Services - that were under the lead of Lester Sutherland for eight years - was split between Media and Archives. The new Coordinator of the International Archives is Reinier Sillem, 22, son of Faisal, who is keen to work in this area that comprises the five International Archives Centers (SAI), the Tape Preservation Unit (Faisal Sillem), the Film Archives (Harris Smart), and the Video Talks Archives (Robin Drewett). A working party on the Use of Internet in Subud was also formed, to follow up on the decisions of Bali and to propose a policy in this matter.

Subud Publications International (SPI) had their AGM at BIG 2002 and George Helmer was appointed as new Chair as Edward Mackenzie felt his term was over. Edward will go on as a member of their board. Fortunately they have already met their budget for 2002 and 2003, and will devote their efforts exclusively to the translation of Bapak's Talks into English and to the English Volumes, producing 80 talks per year – in other words, 4 Volumes. Volume 8 will soon be available, and Sharif & Tuti have already started translating the 9th, even working on trains as witnessed by chance by Daniel Cheifetz on his way from London to Sheffield, when he heard Bapak’s voice coming from another wagon!

It was a big BIG, and I wish to express once again my deep appreciation for the excellent job done by the British team lead by Ridwan Poole, and to Subud Britain that underwrote any eventual deficit that, thank God, didn't happen. Many Subud organisations and members were quite busy working and networking to plan new moves and our way ahead, as not a few felt we are beginning to prepare for something and that the next World Congress might see Subud going public or at least getting ready to do so.
